Remote Start = Check Engine Light???

Let me share my current situation: 2020 M340i (no engine or tune modifications - all stock) During the colder months of the year I utilize the remote start function via the key fob. In most cases the car starts with no issues but in the recent months I have experienced this issue twice - vehicle starts, runs approximately 15sec, shuts-off and check engine light illuminates.

The first experience the check engine light remained active regardless of the number of on/off cycles. Made an appointment with the dealer for a warranty claim. Dealer stated the issue was a direct cause of a loose gas cap.

The second and most recent experience (2days prior) I immediately verified the gas cap to be secure - no issue, gas cap was tight. I have driven over 200miles, verified the gas cap multiple times and even filled up with fuel - check engine light is still illuminated.

Prior to scheduling a time to swing by the dealer, I wanted to quickly verify if anyone has experienced the same issue, and if so what was the culprit? I have verified the "allow engine to start" option to be selected within the climate control settings with iDrive. What is the beset way to verify active/inactive codes?

Any insight or direction is always appreciated!

We don’t have remote start here in the UK but I wonder if it might possibly be a 12v battery issue? I have had various functions (stop/start, comfort access, automatic seat and steering wheel heating, software updates downloading but not able to install) not working intermittently without a ‘low battery’ warning message appearing.

My battery was replaced under warranty yesterday and all is well today.

Best bet is to pull the code and see what it says.

Is there a specific way to verify fault codes without the use of a scanner on these vehicles?

No, need a scanner but I do believe autozone will pull codes for you. You may have to research BMW specific ones but should get you started.

I bought an OBD scanner to use with bimmercode, it's been a great tool for $65, I helped out one of my employees last week with his lincoln, was throwing a misfire bank 2 and he changed his coilpacks and found one that the shady dealer had glued back together!

I had the same exact issue on a '21 540i, happened 3-4 times over the span of a month when using remote start.

Car turned off after a few seconds and check engine light showed up. In my case, the light went away after 1-3 on/off cycles.

It was a rental so never looked into it.

Nice! Guess I'll purchase a scanner and see how things progress!

Appreciate your help!

Hmmmm, this seems to be a sporadic issue across years and models. All the threads I've read the CEL turns off over a few cycles, unfortunately mine remains illuminated regardless of the cycles.

This is the one I have and apparently it's almost doubled in price since I bought it, but it is super handy:

Appreciate the link! Agreed - the Bluetooth style scanners are nice. I presume this unit can verify codes without the use of Bimmercode correct?

Yeah it has its own app. Can also do additional gages and performance testing as well.

And data logs.

Yes they can. I have an OBDLink LX that does the same things the MX does (when it comes to BMW cars). I barely use it now. I can let it go for a decent price if you are interested. Let me know. New on Amazon costs $90+tax

Was able to determine the code - P0456. Anyone have any ideas? I've read multiple threads but most of them are older and have no direct correlation to the utilization of the remote start function.

I had a very similar issue living in Canada, the remote start would do the same exact thing, the dealer found it to be my grill…. Long story short when you start the car remotely, the grill opens and closes for a few seconds, my clip on the grill broke making it impossible to open if needed. This may be your issue but not sure. I got a CEL just like you

Appreciate the insight! Do you by chance remember which clip was the culprit?

There's an easy way to find out if your active grill is working. Turn on the car and set Max AC. See if your grill opens by itself

Put your car on a charger and see if it goes away. My car stopped remote starting and was having a check engine. Dealer thought maybe it was a low battery. After that I had a 4 hour road trip. It was a sufficient amount of drive time, to where it must had charged the battery enough. I never got the error after that and remote start has worked every time since.

Confirmed - flaps open/close without any issues.

Don't think the issue is with the battery - the only time I experience issues is when I use the remote start function, and it's sporadic (might have an issue once every 10-20 starts)
