M340i vs M340D
Just looking around at cars, currently drive a M340i but need to drive to the office a bit more increasing my mileage around 5K a year
So could go from 7K to 12K ish a year. I've seen a nice M340D which is LCI and has a nice spec, few questions Is the matrix LED the same as the old laser lights on the pre LCI ? Also what is the real world MPG figures. My 340i is 22-28 around heavy traffic in town, 30 ish on A and B roads and 37 driving on the motorway Driving a 340D what is the MPG around town and motorway ? Also for reference my old F series 330D I would get around 39MPG on the motorway doing roughy same speeds as the 340i Thanks |

Comparison of LCI M340i and M340D here (incl. not very scientific MPG test). No real-world experience of the M340D MPG, sorry, but I'm sure someone else can help with that! |

I have a M440D. Daily I travel about 10 minutes to and from work, probably less than 5 miles each way. Light suburban traffic. Get high 30s.
When warmed up, city driving will be higher. Not heavy traffic, but just urban driving I will see low 40s. Warmed up country driving I will easily get low-mid 50s. Warmed up, steady Autobahn cruising has seen my mileage go into the 60s. I wrote about some Alp trips here : https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1918471 Last Summer I drove from Switzerland to the West of Scotland. Normally I catch a ferry (Previously Zeebrugge, now Rotterdam) but they were all fully booked. First time in 20 years that happened. So, bought a Eurotunnel ticket. My idea was to see how far I could get, then get somewhere to stay the night. I left at about 5am in Swiztzerland. I reset the trip meter. After about 30 minutes driving the range was indicated as 1100 kms. When I arrived in England (early afternoon) I kept driving. In the evening I still felt OK, so pressed on. I arrived outside my Mum's house just after midnight. Travellled 1022 miles door-to-door after 17 hours behind the wheel. Last 50 miles or so were enjoying the quiet, sweeping and undulating roads in the Galloway hills, at a pace of "skelping on". MPG for the day was 56.4. On the return trip I caught a ferry to Rotterdam. I drive on the Autobahn back at normal pace. Trip through Europe was 801kms and averaged 60.7 MPG. I had filled up at Ferrybridge services before Hull and still had a 1/4 of a tank remaining. Didn't re-tank for another few weeks. None of those trips were done with any intention of hyper-miling. Just driving normally, torque surfing. Others will get much less economy I'm sure. I also had an F32 330D S-drive, and a F32 335D. This M440D is night and day better on economy. I've never used Eco mode. 99% in Comfort, occasionaly in Adaptive. D.

Those are some very impressive consumption figures Dave!
By comparison I have an M440i so the only difference to you is petrol as opposed to diesel and from your narrative my usual driving style seems very similar to yours. So for the benefit of the OP and comparative purposes I get about 30 mpg in town/traffic, anything between 35-40 mpg for urban and steady motorway as much as 46/47 mpg. Clouting it along on a challenging country 'B' road and the figure will drop considerably but surprisingly not 'like a stone' as with some cars, probably about 30 mpg ish. Can't remember now since it's so long since I've done that! |

HBA works the beam pattern and separation on her LED equipped car in the same way as it does on my laser lights, and yes the lasers are brighter and further reaching but not massively so. Her inner headlights (but bear in mind it's a 2 series coupe so the light units are different) do not function as headlights at all, neither dipped or main beams they only host the daytime running light function. On my 4 series the inners are dipped headlights as well as the outers and it's only the outers that have the laser light modules if I can remember that correctly. (If I've got that wrong I'm sure someone on here will put me right!) My lights have the steering tracking function on as well and also the cornering lights I think they are called for when you perform low speed turning movements. |

Honestly I don't know how you guys get those numbers on M340d xDriver.
For the past 10.000km, I've averaged around 8l/100km. (35mpg) - driving mostly highway. But given my heavy foot and the speed 150-190km/h - I'm still very satisfied.

Just checked MyBMW app and my LCI G21 330XD has 6.8l/100km over ~8000km I have for last 6 month of 2023. The app informs me, that 60% of 330XD drivers have better efficiency than me I'm pretty sure 340XD will not be that far off.

I'm jealous LOL!! 330 xdrive is what I would have bought, had it been available in the UK. That said, although my 340i returns around 27 MPG with my daily town and short A road driving, I recently had it on a short trip with still plenty of roundabouts on dual carriageways, it still gave me 35 MPG, which I was quite impressed with TBH, the B58 engine will indeed return great MPG (for a 375 HP car) on the motorway for sure. I've had my 340i for 6 months now, and it's still never been on an actual motorway with me driving yet |

The laser light will only activate when all four high beams are on though, ie no other traffics around, and not when the headlights are doing the anti dazzle features. In all fairness the newer matrix system is better at the anti dazzle side of things as the LEDs within the light work like pixels turning on and off where as the lasers are physical movements of all four of the headlight modules. Lasers do sound better though in the pub. |

I am the opposite - every now and then I am a bit regretful for not getting the 40d Mainly because of the LSD and the trapezoid exhaust tips that can be replaced with dual pipes Power delivery with B57 is super smooth and makes for a effortless daily driver and exceptional GT car.

Keep your M340i but I must be doing something wrong as I struggle to get anything over 30mpg unless I drive like a granny .
On another note what is the Remus exhaust like as I’m missing the MPPSK from my F30 which is the only negative about the car due to the OPF filter, wanted the MPE but apparently it can’t be ordered by my local stealers as it’s a South African only part I was told.

Looking on the app and my trip to the hills and back.... Out split over 2 days Day 1 - 536 miles @ 31.5 mpg Day 2 - 246 miles @ 32.7 mpg I was in a hurry and drove quite speedily. But on the return I was much calmer Day 1 - 450 miles @ 39.1 mpg Day 2 - 334 miles @ 37.0 mpg As soon as you go over something like 70-75mph, mpg nosedives.

My S5 diesel was like that . Around town , about same as the 340i. It really came into its own when cruising . Its sweet spot though was about 62… the M1 roadworks couple of years ago went on for nearly 30 miles with large stretches at 60 . Could get 55mpg+ on that bit !

Had a 335d and now a m340d, both tourings. I do approx 20k miles a year with a mixture of 30 miles each way commuting to the office and sometimes in excess of 100miles to sites, on average I’ve managed over 48mpg. This is easily 10% improvement on the 335d and is also a much more refined car.
Personally think the m340d is the best and quickest all round diesel which returns a really great mpg. For 12k miles a year I’d be keeping the m340i |

I used to do 30k a year so diesel it was. But these past few, I do about 10k in my car and 5k in my truck. So petrol it is, but I'd be more than happy with a 40d. My concern re the politics of it all when I bought the 40i 3 years ago seems not to have materialised.

I’ve had a 330d and M340i G20. The diesel had a noticeably heavier front end compared to the petrol in my opinion. The petrol was much lighter and nimble. The economy of the B58 can be surprising. It never really dropped below 34mpg around town and could easily hit 40plus on a run. I didn’t really miss the diesel.
