2025 Factory Order "Driving Assistance Package" vs "professional package"
Curious the difference in the current options for the 2025 330i.
I don't do alot of highway driving, so I don't need the auto steering or lane keeping, but I do alot of stop-and-go city driving. The Driving Assistance Package seems to only be "Active Cruise Control" which says "a useful feature for stop and go traffic" Is that all I will need, and will the car actually automatically brake and accelerate in city driving? Im confused because I thought I read that Active Cruise Control only works over 40mph (or something like that). Thanks! Jim |

Active Cruise Control can indeed handle stop-and-go traffic by automatically adjusting your speed and braking as needed. It's designed to be useful in city driving. The car will automatically brake and accelerate in city traffic, making your driving experience smoother and more manageable.
I personally use this feature in my 2025 M340i, and it makes city driving a lot easier for me, as I don't have to constantly adjust to others and can just let the car handle that. For the start-stop feature, the car will come to a complete stop and hold until the car in front starts moving again. However, I find that the car feels unnatural when coming to a stop, so I tend to take over just as the car in front applies their brakes to stop at an intersection. Another issue I've found is that when a car merges into a turning lane, the system will think they are stopping in your lane, and this can be abrupt. Therefore, I place my foot on the gas pedal so that as soon as the car acts, I can apply the gas. This interrupts the system from braking. Once past the car in the turning lane, I let the car take control again. Other than those two issues, I find the system to be very smooth and it also adjusts well in time before approaching a car that is, let's say, going 10 mph slower. The BMW will coast and then start to apply the brakes if needed. |

Professional package is also super useful in stop and go traffic. It will steer the car and even allow you not to always keep the hands on the steering wheel.
Also, that option is very popular when people are browsing used cars. |

I recommend the Pro version. The assisted driving feature is useful not just for motorways but also for auto lane management, route adaptation (slows down near roundabout /junction / bends automatically.
I had the VW version of Active Cruise control and after using the BMW version on my 330i, the BMW is way better. I do a lot of road trips and DAP make driving effortless and I use both Distance Control and Assisted Driving mode depending on situation. |

I drive a 2025 BMW 330i (I named him: "Hayko") and I have the Driving Assistance Professional Package and so I'll chime in about my experience with the system! I should also inform you that this is my 2nd 3 series, but my first BMW with Driving Assistance Professional! The car before my current car was a 2021 BMW 330i that just had the basic Driver Assistance Package! **DISCLAIMER - all the content in this post is based off of the North American Region - BMW of North America! ** Active Driving Assistant (5AS) - is either a stand alone option ($500) or is included with the Convenience Package and Premium Packages - includes: - Frontal Collision Mitigation w/ Brake Intervention - Active Blind Spot Detection - Lane Departure Warning w/ Steering Intervention NOTE: I am not sure if Active Blind Spot Detection includes Steering Intervention Driving Assistance Package (ZDA) * Consist of Active Cruise Control - All it does is adds distance control to the cruise control system and yes it can bring the car to a full on stop, and then when traffic starts moving, you start moving - Yes there is a setting to use Cruise Control without Distance Control Driving Assistance Professional Package (ZDY) * Consists of the following: - Active Cruise Control with both Distance Control and Active Lane Keeping Assistant - (aka: The Steering Assistant) - Evasion Assistant - Side Collision Warning - Traffic Jam Assistant for limited access highways - you can take your hands off of the steering wheel when traveling on certain highways when traveling below 40mph - Cross Traffic NOTE: Yes you can use cruise control without distance and steering assistants! Traffic Jam Assistant - as mentioned above, this system will allow hands-free driving when traveling at speeds below 40 mph * When driving with the ACC with stop and go on, and with all the conditions being met, the system will give you an "Assist Plus Ready" option, and once you press "MODE", the system will then activate, and the following will also occur: - The lights on the Steering wheel will illuminate GREEN - You can take your hands OFF of the steering wheel when traveling below 40mph NOTE: If traffic conditions improve and the car goes faster than 40 mph, the system will alert you and tell you to put your hands back on the wheel - The Infrared camera will activate and car will be monitoring your eye movement and your behavior NOTE: The system will issue several warnings if you are distracted or are not being attentive The Infrared Camera will only activate when the system allows you to take your hands off of the wheel. While driving with ACC stop & go with hands on the wheel, the Infrared camera will not be active... at least from my experience A few notes about my experience 1. The Infrared Camera annoys me when on - there are times it tells me to "stay attentive"... even though my eyes are on the road and I am paying attention...? (I be saying: "Hayko LEAVE me ALONE!" lol) 2. The ACC Stop & Go annoys me in the morning and I wonder if this is due to the front camera facing towards the sun 3. I deactivated the "Steering Intervention" for Active Blind Spot Detection because it just annoyed me to no end! I would suggest driving a 3 series with the package and get your own experience - if you frequently drive in traffic at speeds below 40 mph, the Driver Pro package might be worth it + you get other safety tech like Side collision! NOTE/WARNING: Only drive a 3 series with Driver Pro! The Driver Assistance Professional Package in the 3 series is NOT the same as the Driver Assistance Professional Package in the iX (for example) - the iX allows hands free driving up to 85 mph, while the 3 series allows hands free up to 40 mph! I hope all this helps, but please let me (us) know if you have any additional questions! Down below are some screenshots of the MY25 Pricing guides for additional reference! Best, Cameron (2025 BMW 330i - named: "Hayko") |

I can answer your question and I'll answer it in two ways: A. Short and Simple B. Long and Detailed A. Short and Simple answer(s) Can use Traffic Jam Assistant on the city streets? NO Can you "manipulate" and use Active Cruise Control on the city streets? YES, but you are still responsible for the car, and if you are new to BMW's (incl. Their iDrive system, their Driving system/settings, etc.), then I would advise not using it in the city altogether. B. Long and Detailed Answer Although the Active Cruise Control w/ Stop & GO (ACC) is meant to only be used on the highway and when it is safe to do so, YES you can "manipulate" the system and use it on city streets. Basically, the Steering Assistant will keep your car within the lane and the Distance Control will use the car in front of it to adjust the vehicle speed and can even bring to a full on stop! NOTES/DISCLAIMERS: - Use at your own risk and when safe to do so - Please know the system was designed to be used on the highway and NOT the city streets! - As mentioned above, the ACC (mainly) will only do two things: Keep the distance and keep the car in the lane. That is it.... So the car/system will ignore Traffic Signs/Lights, Emergency vehicles, and other rules of the road. - Just know that every time you drive through an intersection, the system will temporarily deactivate (The system turns Yellow) and this is because there are no lane markings in intersections. ** PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU ARE STILL RESPONSBIBLE FOR THE VEHICLE AND THESE ADVANCED DRIVING ASSISTANT SYSTEMS (ADAS) ARE JUST THAT - "ASSISTANCE" (e.g., Frontal Collison - "WARNING", lane departure - "WARNING", Steering - "ASSISTANT", Traffic Jam - "ASSISTANT", lane change - "ASSISTANT", etc.) ** So a good example of this would be the "Frontal Collision Warning w/ Brake Intervention" - I tell people that its one of those things that "its just there and it works, I hope you never have to use it". That said, for those who want to "experience" the Frontal Collision Warning w/ Brake Intervention? That is a good example of the saying: "Play stupid games and you'll win a stupid prize" - If you tailgate someone and the system, for whatever reason, does not stop the car and it results in you rear-ending someone? Folks ain't trying to hear "It was my car's fault", you still going to be responsible! <-- This is one of the reasons why I do NOT believe full on self - driving cars (LEVEL - 5) will exist in our lifetime, that along with liability, insurance, and warranty, but that's a whole different topic for discussion. Traffic Jam Assistant vs. Highway Assistant I. Traffic Jam Assistant - is available on the G20's (3 series) * Allows you to take your hands off of the wheel at speeds of 40 mph or less on closed-access highways. - How it works is, when driving with ACC Stop & Go + all conditions have been met, you'll see a message appear on the control display that the system is ready. Additionally, you'll see a special icon pop up on the instrument cluster that states "ASSIST PLUS READY". Then pressing the "MODE" button on the Steering Wheel will result in the following: 1. You'll hear a special chime 2. The steering wheel lights on the steering wheel will illuminate GREEN 3. The Driver Attention (Infrared) Camera will also be activated and will be monitoring you to make sure you are still awake and alert. 4. You can take your hands completely off the steering wheel! Once traffic starts moving and your speed goes past 40 mph, the system will tell you to put your hands back on the steering wheel and now you will be switched back to the ACC Stop & Go, the lights on the steering wheel turn off, as well as the Driver Attention (Infrared) Camera. That being said, the car (not you), but the car will notify you when the system is ready to be activated after all conditions have been satisfied. It is only here will you see the "ASSIST PLUS READY" Icon/Message pop up, and once activated, you can take your hands off the wheel! Being that the Traffic Jam Assistant can only be activated once all conditions have been met (and remember it is the car that gives you the A-ok to use the system), you cannot use Traffic Jam Assistant on city streets! - The "closed-access highway" prerequisite will never be satisfied, thus the "ASSIST PLUS READY" will never show up, which means you won't be able to activate the system! lol Highway Assistant - is NOT available on the 3 series * is nearly identical to the Traffic Jam Assistant in terms of functions, but here are a few main points: - Allows Hands-free driving at speeds up to 85 mph - Does not require a "target vehicle" to be present - will include: "Lane Change w/ Active Navigation" A few additional things about Driving Assistance Professional in my 2025 BMW 330i: 1. Even though you can remove your hands from the wheel when the Traffic Jam Assistant is active, you can still rest your hands on the steering wheel if you would like. 2. Sunglasses (incl. Polarized Sunglasses) have no affect on the Driver Attention Camera, which means you can still wear sunglasses and use the system! NOTE: The owner's manual states that the Driver Attention Camera is an Infrared (IR) system, and so wearing any eyewear that reflects IR lighting may result in the system either malfunctioning or not working at all. 3. I quickly got annoyed with that Driver Attention Camera, because I keep getting a bunch of "Stay Alert" messages/chimes and my eyes were wide open looking at the road in front me.... I found myself having to constantly move my head, body, and eye location to keep the system satisfied, and that got annoying quickly, and so soon after, I told my car "Hayko - STFU and raise up off of me; my eyes are wide open and I am paying attention" and then I turned everything off altogether and just drove the car manually! NOTE: The "Stay Attentive" message/warning is NOT to be confused with the "Driver Distracted" message/chime that you get when your eyes are not on the road (e.g., using your phone, using the control display, etc.) 4. It is not clear if the G20's have the "Emergency Stop Assistant" or not, but the demonstration video on the BMW Driving Guide App will appear in the "Animations" menu, but there will be no settings for it and there is no confirmation that the system is even on. (e.g., a 2025 X5 with Driver Assist Professional will include the "Emergency Stop Assistant" setting in the "Driver Assistance Menu" and the only thing you can do is turn it off - it is on by default from the factory) <--- THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD ONLY DRIVE A 3 SERIES WITH THIS OPTION AND NOT THE OTHER MODELS!!!! * I mention the Emergency Stop Assistant, because if you don't take over the vehicle when the vehicle asks (lights turn RED), then that is 1 of 4 different possible triggers that will activate the Emergency Stop Assistant, and just like the Frontal Collision Warning, the Emergency Stop Assistant is something that I hope you would never have to use. - I guess my problem is this: Why is it that an X5 with iDrive 8.5 has a designated setting/confirmation for the Emergency Stop System, but a 3 series, that also uses iDrive 8.5, does not....just like how is it that "Lavender" (Purple) is a selectable color for the Ambient Lighting in the X5 w/ OS 8.5, but that same color is totally absent in the Ambient Lighting menu in the MY25 3's that, just like the X5, is using iDrive or OS 8.5?? Like, you can't make this stuff up!! A few additional tips and final thoughts: 1. The nice thing about the Driver Assist Professional in the G20's is that most of the settings to use the system are on the steering wheel itself, whereas in the X5 the "Distance Control" settings are no longer on the wheel, but instead buried relatively deep in the iDrive menu/settings. 2. I also like how the moment you put your foot on the brake or if you press "Cancel" button on the steering wheel, you immediately gain full manual control over the vehicle. Piggy backing off of that, the system will resume once you press the "Resume" button on the steering wheel, and I find that the Distance Control and Steering Assistant usually take no more than 10 seconds to activate - both icons turning Green. 3. The best way to try out the system is to get behind those big rig trucks that are usually traveling in the slow right lane - this will allow you to try the system out on a relatively consistent basis! 4. As mentioned you can adjust the distance for ACC Stop & Go to either "Close", "Medium", or "Far". - People who are either new to BMW's or their Advanced Driving systems, I usually start off in "Medium". I have tons of experience with BMW's system and so my car is in "close", but even in the closest settings, I think it still leaves too much of a gap. - Do NOT have the distance set to "Far", otherwise your car will keep on braking every time a car gets in front of you. 5. Activating ACC system will switch your view in the instrument cluster to "Assist" view and that is basically a cartoon version of what your car is doing (e.g., targeting the car in front, a green arrow popping up when you initiate a lane change assist, etc.). There is a setting to disable this - you will still see the distance and steering assistant icons pop up, regardless of what the content is. 6. Unlike the X5 and iX, the Augmented View in the G20's is navigation only and is not associated with Driver Assist Professional. 7. As mentioned above, if your vehicle does have Driver Assistance Professional, you can still use the basic, normal cruise control in your car - If you press and hold either one of the "distance control" buttons on the steering wheels for a few seconds, will put you in the the basic, normal cruise control and so your car will just maintain whatever the set speed is and nothing more. 8. Yes the car will remember your previously used settings (e.g., if you have the distance set to "close", the "close" distance will be used the next time you use the system.) 9. With the Traffic Jam Assistant Active (which includes the Driver Attention Camera), you can change radio stations/songs/media via the menu that pops up when you use the little wheel on the right side of the vehicle, and that menu can either appear in the instrument cluster or in the Head - Up Display (HUD), but not both! Doing this will result in you not having to look at the control display, which should decrease the chance of you getting the "Driver Distracted" Warning/Sign. 10. Regardless of what package you get, I would strongly suggest you option the "Drive Recorder" option ($100) to your vehicle and this is basically your car's dash cam that is always recording and deleting content using the car's exterior surround cameras, that when properly set up, your vehicle will automatically save video content up to 20 seconds before and 20 seconds after impact. NOTE: I believe you have to option the "Parking Assistance Package" to get the Drive Recorder - In the accessories catalog, BMWUSA does have a more advanced dash cam that is called: "Advanced Car Eye" - this is basically a more sophisticated version of the Drive Recorder, but it is a PAIN in the A** to set up post delivery and so if you order your car and dashcams are important to you, it is easier and more cost-efficient to have them install this accessory at the port! Bottom line for Driver Assistance Professional YAY - If you are constantly driving in traffic conditions where your speed is usually 40 mph or less or if you drive a lot of highway miles - If you want the "Side Collision Warning" and for Active Blind Spot Detection to include Steering Intervention. NAY - If Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) is not your thing and remember these advanced driving systems are NOT perfect. - if you live in an area that experiences bad weather (e.g., rain) and you drive a lot during the evening/night hours of the day. NOTE: I mention this because whenever I drive home late at night and it is pouring down raining, I would constantly get "Reduced Driver Assistance - Lane Departure and Frontal Collision Warnings" and this is due to poor visibility. - If the $1,700 price tag is too steep NOTE: Remember the basic Driver Assistance Package is $500 and it basically adds the distance control to your cruise control and nothing else. Would I get Driving Assistance Professional again in my next 3? A. I'm not sure; I don't use all the stuff in this package and I do get annoyed and find myself having to override the system more times than not. Do I regret getting Driving Assistance Professional? A. No What would you change? A. I probably would've taken that $1,700 and option my 330i (that is Tanzanite Blue Metallic) with Black Vernasca Leather w/ Blue Stitching! NOTE: Blue, as you can tell, is my favorite color and I think the Blue Leather Stitching complements the Blue exterior paints of either Tanzanite or Portimao Blue Bottom line - it is hard to say whether you should or shouldn't get this package and many bring up good points, but I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DO A TEST DRIVE ON A 3 SERIES WITH DRIVER ASSISTANCE PROFESSIONAL - you'll probably find more M340i's equipped with this option, but try the system out (maybe they have a loaner?), and if you are frequently in stop and go traffic, then I would do the test drive when traffic in your area is at its worst That said, I know this was really long, but let me (us) know if you have any additional questions or thoughts! PS - Harman Kardon Surround Sound is a MUST for me!! PSS - Down below are some additional resources for you! https://www.bmwusa.com/explore/drive...-features.html https://www.bmwusa.com/explore/conne...ml#!#resources https://apps.apple.com/sg/app/bmw-dr...de/id714042749 https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...e.row&hl=en_US PSSS or "Fun Fact" - Down below is a screenshot I took from the Build Your Own on an X5 on BMWUSA's website, and the highway assistant on an 2025 X5 has a usage/time restriction. The Highway Assistant can only be used for the 1st 8 years after vehicle sale. Once them 8 years have passed? The system/feature will become disabled and will no longer be useable This is "Technological Obsolescence" summed up all in one screenshot! Once them warranties on them FULL (LEVEL - 5) Self - Driving Vehicles expire?? You goin' have everyone and they mama/family making a run for it; I'm sure the value of that car will be a joke and I wouldn't be surprised if Insurance companies in the future will no longer provide coverage once a LEVEL - 5 Autonomous vehicle has reached a certain age/miles! Now if that wasn't bad enough, the part that does it for me is for folks wanting these cars to FLY! LOL Y'all could hangout with The Jetsons, but Y'all would catch me with the Flindstones Best, Cameron (2025 BMW 330i - named: "Hayko") |

One thing I have noticed that the system seems to work a bit different on different BMW models. The newest X1 seems to be less sensitive to keeping you in the lane when not in active cruise. The new G60 5 series also. My G30 (23 5 series) has an early, mid and late choice for lane keep assist. When set in early it really tugs you back into a lane (Not on cruise which keeps you centered). I think the 3 series is the same exact system as my 5? Has anyone else noticed that the newer systems (X1, G60 etc.) provide less assist with normal driving? When in cruise I think both systems work the same way. I prefer the older variant that allows you to set it to early, medium or late as I think it actually works better (When not in cruise). The 4 series I rented in Europe also worked incredibly well assuming it is the same on the 3. I also have a defeat cable that I never installed that makes the car think you have hands on the wheel to defeat the orange flashing lights which are annoying on long open highway drives. I never installed it. Any other Driving assistance geeks out there? I would definitely Gert the DAP vs the others. Also, BMW makes the 3 options very misleading and confusing to the consumer. Why not simply have 1 package or make it standard like most other manufactures. In the EU it is mandatory I believe. Happy to say BMW is one of the best systems! |
