IX1

Does anyone have any experience of the iX1, specifically the XDrive30 model?

My current lease is ending shortly and have found a pretty amazing deal on the iX1. Theses are stock vehicles and need to be delivered by the end of the year.

I have a test drive booked for Thursday so I’ll find out for myself then.

I have one on order (factory build). The ‘poverty spec’ version is really very basic, so make sure the one you get has plenty of options picked. And you can’t get by with packs - even tech-plus doesn’t give you HK audio or electric seats!

I have noticed that some pretty basic options do seem to be missing. I’m looking at the M Sport and I could get by with that. My current car doesn’t have all the fancy driver assistance gadgets so not really missing any. It’s only me that will be driving it, so electric seats are not necessary and I’m a home hifi man, so don’t really rate HK anyway.

Looks like the M-Sport trim gives what's needed for the most part.

as above be very careful with spec

also be aware that if you have a home charger then the use of the vehicle is much easier and much cheaper

the battery is rated as 270 miles from 100%. but you'll not get that, and should really charge to 80% for most regular use. so you are likely to need to charge every 150 miles or so

if your use case is lots of short journeys and you can plug in at home then it probably works. if you regularly travel 100 miles in a day then it will get tiresome quickly

(I'm not an EV hater, have also got a company EV in addition to my M340i. My EV is rated at 363 miles on 100% charge. I learnt my lesson from my first EV which only did 200 on a full charge.)

Most people seem to get at least 200 miles range, more in summer. That's fine for me because 200 miles is around three hours driving, and I like to stop after three hours or so for a wee and a coffee.

I work from home and mostly do short journeys. My car sits in the garage most of the time anyway, so no difficulty with charging.

You actually keep your car in a garage? That's so rare these days. (Mainly because most garages are too small for a car!)

If you're on Facebook (I realise many people hate the place!) there's a UK iX1 group that you might find useful. https://www.facebook.com/groups/739202930422325

I do! And my house was a new build (9 years ago), but built by a smaller builder who specifically designed the garages to take a large SUV.

My current 3 series fits in easily, as well as there being room for the usual junk! I parked a Yaris in there once. I estimated 2 would have fitted, nose to tail.

My advice would be not to do it and try and find a good deal on something else but that's because I think SUVs are the worst thing to exist on the road in years and should be banned

The SUV format makes sense for an EV, because the raised platform means that there's loads of space for the batteries under the seats.

Car ordered - my local dealer matched the online price, and I’ve chosen a car in Cape York Green (I’m a bit bored of white, blue and black) with sun protection glass (it should be standard) and technology pack (again some of the items should be standard).

It will be here fairly soon, and it isn’t subject to any of the blocks (brake and b-pillar issues).

I fancied a change, and it’s not too crazy. There was a Fire Red 4 gran coupé in the showroom which looked gorgeous.

Fire Red looks incredible ... when it's clean ... but, like all red cars , if its not immaculately cleaned then they look kinda sad and washed out.

So a bit of a sad day today as my 330i was handed back to the lease company.

Not all bad though as tomorrow I pick up the iX1.

I’ll be interested to hear how you get on. My iX1 is being built in January, so I’m going to ask the dealer to hold off and get a 25 registration in March. I’ll then sell my 330e privately (or maybe via Carlow).

I picked up my new iX1 Xdrive 30 yesterday and I have to say I’m very impressed, although I’ve not driven that far yet.

It’s very quiet and refined and despite there being negative comments about the lack of physical buttons and idrive controller I’m impressed with the curved screen set up. It makes idrive 7 which I had in my G20 look a bit dated.

I’m still finding my way around the menus but I think I’ve set most things up now and shouldn’t need changing again.

This is my first EV so having some anxiety about charging and range but I’m sure that will soon be overcome.

I don’t understand range anxiety - surely it’s no different to petrol?

The difference is you can generally find a petrol station within 10 miles, it will have fuel available and you can fill up in 5 mins, so you never really have to give any consideration or planning for range, even for long trips.
