Fuel consumption is not drooping to 0 anymore

Hi everyone,

I am new here, and I hope I posted in the correct section.

I am a happy fresh owner of a G20 330xd mild hybrid. I put approximately 4300 km in 2 months, and recently I noticed strange behavior. I want to ask if it is normal.

When I ride at constant speed and lift the foot from the accelerator, when it does not switch off the engine to do coasting, the instant fuel consumption is not going to 0 anymore. At first, I believed that it is in regen, but I drove over 100 km on the highway since I noticed and nothing changed.

As a note, coasting is working as usual, start-stop is working, and no matter the charge status of the 48V battery.

When I purchased the car, I was at a dealership and everything was OK ( DPF, injectors, etc.).

Is this a normal thing or would I check something?

Hope you are using Eco Pro mode. I have a 330Li (without mild hybrid) and when I am in Eco Pro mode I have also noticed that the car shifts out of Efficient coasting and goes into Charging battery mode (can see it in adaptive content view on iDrive 8.5). It is something similar to regenerative braking. I think it is sensing traffic in front (using the radar) and does this automatically. Its better this way because instead of physical braking you are engine braking.

However, this sometimes happens even when there is no traffic in front i.e. in highways. If this happens, I accidentally found out that the if you pull the upshift paddle twice fairly quickly it goes into coasting mode, which is a relief. This happens only in Eco Pro mode.

But, I have also not understood why it goes out of coasting into charging mode often. Strangely, during coasting (when the blue car symbol comes on in the instrument cluster) the instant mileage varies between 40-80 kmpl whereas when it says charging battery it is at 99.5 kmpl (i.e. consumption is almost 0). This doesn't seem to be the case for you though.

On my earlier 320d, coasting used to be near 0 and it never used to do this regen of battery.

I have asked my local BMW techys and they said they will check with another similar car and report back in a week's time.

Will update if I get some info.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I’m in EcoPro mode.

It’s strange that fuel consumption is still around 2.5-3 L/100 km (40-30 kmpl) even when charging.

In Comfort mode, fuel consumption doesn’t drop to 0.

I think this was the behavior for Sport Mode, where the battery charge was prioritized.

I don’t mind the charging mode; it activates when I decelerate or approach another vehicle.

Can the engine remain engaged to the transmission or alternator?

Have a nice day!

Engine-off coasting.
Engine-off coasting facilitates consumption-free and emission-free motion of the vehicle with maximum retention of kinetic energy. When the driver’s foot leaves the accelerator pedal, the function switches between coasting and recuperation adaptively on the basis of data from the surroundings. Engine-off coasting is available in vehicles with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. In vehicles without 48-volt mild hybrid technology, the engine remains at idling speed during coasting. Coasting can be experienced in the COMFORT driving mode and in the ECO PRO driving mode with extended availability. The “coasting counter” displays the distance covered in coasting mode.

As per above article, it should work in both modes for you. Do get it checked at a SC.
