Thoughts on my situation?
So first off I’m gonna say all of this that happened to my car is definitely my fault and user error. I’m really an idiot and should definitely listen to my mechanics. So I first wanted to start tuning my car at 30,000 miles around there. I got my dme unlocked since I have a 2020. The shop told me to use bootmod and change my spark plugs before tuning. I didn’t listen knowing I’m a 23 year old bozo. I tuned it 1 hour after I got my ecu unlocked. Tune was running great for about two weeks I was only on stage 1. Then I was driving up a hill and boom my car completely loses power and shuts off. Open the hood there’s white smoke. I turn it off and turn it back on and it was fine. Car started running sluggish though like shaking at idle. So I took to a shop they said I blew a fuel injector. Then said you should change all of them since one blew out. Couldn’t afford it at the time so I said I’ll just do the one for now. So I didn’t listen to the mechanic again. Then I slapped on a jb+ turned it up to max. Car was fine for about 6 months no problems. Then about a month ago I was doing a hard pull and I got a drive chain malfunction right after and the car started sputtering. Pulled over turned it off checked the codes cleared them. Turned the car back on and it was fine no power loss. Then a day later same thing happens this time it was worse the car was sputtering horrible with a check engine light. Took it to the mechanic and he said a blew cylinder 1 and there was no pressure in it. I haven’t had my car for like 2 months now I had to buy a used motor a used turbo. I’m picking it up next week. What do you guys think caused this like I said I know I’m an idiot and you gotta pay to play. I really don’t think a jb+ would do this tbh let me know your thoughts. I want to put the jb+ back on when I get the car back but I know that’s not wise and my wife would be sick if I did that😂. I’m really just on the fence of leaving it stock and just paying off the car and getting an x3m because that’s the car I really want since I have a baby on the way and I need the space. Also who doesn’t love the s58. Clown me all you want haha. Appreciate the feedback.

You mentioned you tuned it if after getting the ecu unlocked? What did you use to tune with? It seems like the problem started from here. Then you decided to put a jb4+ on top of a possible bad tune. Do you have any logs to show?

Yeah I don't think the jb+ did any damage unless it just made the BM3 tune worse. I had BM3 on my 435i for about 3 years until I sold the car. Never had an issue with tune. Had a few age/mileage related issues that were diy's. Rule #1 in tuning a car is making sure maintenance is done first and the motor is solid. You may have had an issue before the tune that was made worse.

Nah I have no logs I had a local shop bench unlock it. Then I use mg flasher to tune it all I had was a stage 1 tune but I was running 91 stage 1 instead of ACN 91 stage 1 since I lived in Cali at the time.

My thoughts are that you cannot afford to play, so don’t play. Drive the car as is from the oem and don’t modify unless you have the budget to handle unforeseen issues.

Sorry I thought you custom tuned it yourself. OTS maps should be fine and shouldn't cause any major damage. But looking at some logs will help. Maybe there was already an existing mechanical issue you weren't aware of. Really hard to tell.

The JB+ should be pretty much harmless. Easy on-off, and at max it shouldn't be enough to cause extensive damage. That's all I needed to put a little kick into my 330i xDrive - makes it interesting enough to keep for a little while longer at least.
I'm not going to be doing any hard core ECU tuning - I'd buy a 340i and be done with it at that point. If you ran one on top of the other, yeah - I have no idea what that might do. But by itself - the JB+ shouldn't cause you grief. But whatever you do, just don't tell the wife - wives cause lots of grief |
