Which one of these pads goes on the inside of the rotor?

M340 with m-sport brakes (the smaller ones)

Rear pads

Notice that one has a thin “sticker?” That overlaps the cutout for the sensor and the other one does not.

Sticker? you mean the brake pad shim?
The one with the full opening will go on the inside where the brake pad sensor is(can't remember if the sensor is driver or passenger side for the rear. Driver side for front brakes)
Kind of a moot point anyhow since the round tabs on the brake pads determine if they go inner vs outer to align with the caliper piston.

this may be a dumb question but it's not obvious to me, does the piston align with the round tabs or the pad where the tabs are far apart so the piston only contacts the black part?

The piston has a recess where the round tabs will slot into. The pad with the round tabs closer together(and the opening for the sensor) go on the inside of the caliper. The pads with the more spaced out tabs go on the outside.

I actually saw this one before I did my brake job but at the time, I hadn't opened the box and didn't notice the rear pads weren't all identical. It was good to rewatch it as this one actually showed the pad install. Most videos kinda skip over details.

RockyMtn's post scared me because I did mine the opposite way he said. I did mine the way the guy in this video did it.

I put the pads with the big gap between the silver buttons on the inside so the piston would only contact the black surface. So the sensor is on the pad with a shim that covers the sensor notch. In this video, the shims came separate. On mine, the shims were pre-installed so it was a little tricky to attach the sensor.

I did 4-wheel pads and rotors Friday night and I've just felt really insecure about the rear pads ever since finishing. I didn't have old ones to look at because on my previous brake job, I install Pagids. So I just had to try to make an educated guess.

Thanks for the video.

The pad with the ear goes on the inside, as this is where your pad wear sensor goes

Apparently my memory didn't serve me well from when i did this last summer. Sorry for the misguided info LOL. Regardless, as long as you're aware that there's an inside/outside pad it's quite easy to see how the round tabs fit against the piston and it's hard to get wrong
