M440i Square or Staggered Tire Size?

I'm working on my build for an M440i and was wondering what the pros and cons are of a square vs a staggered tire setup.

Looking at an AWD if that has any benefit.

Coming from a staggered IS350f, I ordered my 440i squared for the ability to rotate the tires all around.

How did you order it squared? The only option for a squared setup from factory is (I believe) with 18” wheels. All 19” and up come staggered.

Staggered from the factory, Apex aftermarket rims for squared. I use the factory rims for my winters.

If you are thinking tire rotation to balance out front vs rear tire wear, with an AWD car as OP is getting, front vs rear tire wear is not as pronounced as you probably had with your RWD IS350F.

I went with the square setup on my M340iX as well, and tire rotation was one of the reasons. Also, AWD cars do not have much trouble with traction, and it is easier to indice oversteer.

Not true as my ‘26 M440i is 19” square. I think when 19” all season tires are ordered it will be square and 19” summer tires will be staggered at least on the coupe version. Looks like the BMW configurator has staggered for both tires for GCs though.

This, besides BMW does not recommend rotating tires (and I can totally agree).

I have staggered summer P4S 19s on my M340 and I love that setup. Car is very balanced and I do not plan to rotate tires.

While on AWD cars tire wear is more even than on RWD cars, it is still uneven. If your rotation cost is zero, for example if you switch between summer and winter setups, there is no reason not to rotate. Otherwise you need to compare the cost of rotation with the savings from the longer tire life.

Another reason to rotate is that many tire warranties require rotation.

When I chose wheel options it had two choices for the Black 995's. Staggered and not staggered. My build sheet shows 1HH for squared. Staggered is 1HF.

In Europe the only option for 19” wheels is staggered as far as I know.

Clarification on rotating. I have an RWD on order and I live in California where we have 2.5 seasons. Rain is a memory and a government conspiracy on some days.

I have staggered on my RWD M340i and wouldn't change to squared. Yea rotating the tires is nice but the aesthetic is nice and as RWD the extra traction in the back is necessary

Recently swapped from a M235i to a '25 M440i G2x. Today, some dude was watering his lawn and I turned onto the main street and the little bit of water on the road caused me to lose traction at like 15-20 mph from a stop going around the corner.

I looked at my tires this evening...they're square 225/40/19s. Really BMW? Who approved this nonsense? Coming from my staggered M235i, there seems to be significantly less traction in the rears....and the tires are brand new. This never happened in the M235i.

Staggered wheels are a zero-cost option, so it’s kind of on you for not checking what you bought. The square setup also usually comes with lame all season tires.

Unless your tires are bald, you should not have lost traction. Or maybe you were a bit harder on the gas or going a bit faster than you thought?

235/40R19 non‑run‑flats are a solid choice. You’ll get a wider contact patch and a bit more sidewall compared to stock, which helps both grip and ride quality.

Keep in mind the xDrive system isn’t pure RWD; there’s always some power going to the front axle, unless you flash the transmission with xHP.

Running the same size front and rear usually works best on AWD cars. If you go wider in the back than the front, you’ll increase rear grip relative to the front, which tends to create understeer. A square setup keeps the handling balance more neutral and makes rotation easier, especially if you plan on pushing the car. Plus, it keeps the xDrive happy and reduces wear and tear.

Absolutely correct. I went CPO route on 9mo old car, saved $18k on sticker + longer warranty. Beggars can't be choosers. RWD cars, particularly MSport x35/x40s, used to always comes staggered. It's one of the many things I never expected to need to check.

Yes, they are the no-season tires - which I haven't driven on in over 10 years.

Quite sure you meant "flash the transfer case with xDelete"
