Auto Start/Stop. Hate it. What to do?

2023 330i x drive.

If I recall from reading here, there’s no way to delete the ASS via coding? Has the latest BMW software update.

Can I program the car to start in Sport via the car controls, or will I need something like Bimmercode and then learn how to use it?

It’s my daily driver. Comfort is fine for my short daily drive (7 miles to work), and when I need to drive home on the weekends, it goes on Eco mode once I hit the highway.

Still under warranty so I don’t want to plug in an aftermarket hardware plug.

Thanks!

You can delete it via coding with the "xHP" app, just not with Bimmercode. xHP will access your transmission computer system and flash over it. It's much less likely that this will cause a warranty issue than something like overwriting your ECU (its about the same risk level as basic coding).

The alternative option is you CAN use Bimmercode to force your car to start in Sport Individual as you're alluding to as well. This will also override Autostart Stop, but if you ever switch back to "comfort" or "eco" for any reason it will be activated in those modes.

To permanently eliminate it, you must use xHP app, not Bimmercode.

I though 330 has button for ASS, only 340 and 440 LCIs did not have button.

Even if it does have a button the car always defaults to ASS on when starting up. It's annoying - there used to be a "memory feature" where you could have the cars retain their last setting when turned off, but now everytime you restart it is "on."

ASS and ASS2 (Active Sound) are 2 ASSes that should be independently configurable.

Has the button, but I usually remember it after it’s activated. Probably go the bimmercode route for now. Thanks!

This is annoying, not sure if it is possible to set default in 2025 models, but it was easy Carly coding on my old F10. Technically last settings should be active if using button.

There’s already an entire thread on this. Why not post there rather than start a new thread?

https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2023893

TL;DR - currently not possible to code this feature depending on software version and market. Others have coded SI (with everything set to COMFORT) as default startup. But that isn’t ideal for some of us but an acceptable workaround for others.

Push the ASS Off button every time you start the car. What sounds like a horrible experience becomes simple muscle memory after a few days and you laugh at yourself for making a bigger deal out of this than it needs to be. It's right next to the Engine On button. Press one, press the other, done.

They only just added the button back in the '25 models. I, and many other G20 owners don't have a button.

OP I know you said you're not interested in tuning the TCU, but I just flashed xHP in my car yesterday. It was worth every penny just to kill the start/stop. All the other changes are icing on the cake.

From my quick research, it can't be coded out anymore and the only real solution is to flash the TCU with xHP or code the car to start in sport individual and set it up to be more of a "comfort +" setting.

Or just have it start in regular sport mode. Works great if you prefer that mode anyways, and switch to comfort more occasionally, like when you have passengers. The additional advantage of this is you get stronger A/C right from the start. In hotter climates, the weaker A/C that accompanies auto-start/stop makes the "feature" unbearable.

On the other thread I posed 2 permanent options.

1) Bimmercode your car to start in Sport Individual (this will disable ASS)

2) xHP your car to FULLY disable ASS across all modes.

Both work, both are permanent, both require a premium coding license. Bimmercode is cheaper and also let's you deactivate active sound permanently but if you're on factory exhaust this will make your car very quiet.

XHP is more expensive but also tunes your transmission which improves driving feel, speed, and significantly better sounding shifts.

Your call, or you can do both like me

Did anyone tried to set default ASS in 2025 model? We have a button now, but not sure if we can set default on start to off. My car is getting close to get shipped and as soon as I get it I will try with Carly or BimmerCode.

Bimmercode works to default to Sport Individual. However, unlike my 2022 where you could set everything to Comfort, on the 2025 you have to set the drivetrain to Sport or Sport Plus for this to work.

I considered XHP, but my VIN shows it’s not supported. Maybe XHP doesn’t support 2025 or iDrive 8.5, yet.

Thanks, at least we have button to disable. This is the worst annoying thing damn governments put on manufacturers.

Another potential workaround for the 2025 M340i is this hardware solution from aliexpress. I just installed it today and it's working fine so far.

It behaves like a memory, remembering the last setting. If I leave ASS disabled when I shut off the car, ASS remains disabled when I restart.

It also seems to override default drive mode behavior. For example, when switching from Sport to Comfort or Eco-Pro, ASS remains disabled.

The only side effect I've noted is auxiliary power remains on for about twice as long. Before, the hazard light button, 12v socket, and my radar detector (hardwired to the rearview mirror) would usually power off after about 7 minutes. Now, they power off after 14 minutes.

I will never out anything on my car from Ali express. Have minus zero trust to this kind of stuff and will leave it stock.

Let the engine warm up a bit and then press sport individual after setting the suspension to comfort.
