M Performance S/W retrofit

Hey everyone,

Looking to purchase the M Performance Steering Wheel for G20.

I’m curious about the M performance steering wheel buttons and specifically the M1 and M2 buttons. Can these buttons be coded for different functions, and if so, what settings or features can they be customized to?

TIA

There are kits you can buy that add the M buttons to an existing wheel but it requires wiring in a new module in the centre console. Once fitted they cycle between the driving modes. I would assume that the M buttons on the steering wheel fitted as is would do nothing as you'd need the extra module. Note that you may lose steering wheel heating if you have it based on other threads I've seen discussing this.

Thanks for the feedback lnlyssg

That's a bummer. Sounds like a bit more work involved to get them working. Think I'll just stick with my original wheel. I certainly don't want to lose my heated option - first car I've ever owned with it!

I can't be certain about losing the heating function as there do seem to be conflicting reports however there are definitely some signs it won't work e.g. https://ind-distribution.com/product...=product_shelf states "When installing the M Performance steering wheel in cars with steering wheel heating SA 248, the heating function will no longer work"

So no modifications or work arounds to get the heated steering wheel working, simply plug n play?

As long as your car had it previously and the replacement wheel has it there shouldn't be any additional programming.

As i mentioned, my replacement wheel was from an M3 or M4 and was a heated wheel. It was literally case of switching the wheel and then plugging in to make it work.

Some of the M Performance Steering Wheels may not have heating, i remember looking at the part Alcantara wheel with the blue strip and i recall this not having the option.

The wheel I am looking at is from an M3 and is heated, so sounds like it should be a drop in replacement for mine.

I've swapped over a few wheels in my previous VAG cars, so I would have been surprised if it wasn't just plug n play - excluding some of the extra buttons (M1 & M2)

I too had same thoughts but I asked someone that knows few things about retrofits and been told its not possible to keep M buttons

So I ended up with removing the M buttons and putting back cover from the original steering wheel

I am still happy with the final results, nice CF paddle shifters, nice overall dark look of the trim and the M tri-stitching

My M1 and M2 buttons work perfectly to switch between drive modes but you do need to buy the kit, it can't be enabled through coding.

Bimmer_Jam Do you already have the Steering Wheel?
I have just removed the M3 Wheel from my M340i as i traded the car in.
I'll be listing a lot of items on here in the coming week but i thought i would mention this as you are looking to change yours.

Will do mate, it was all taken off in a rush and packed away the weekend before last as the deal on the new car was done last minute and based on a quick collection before 2 days later before end of the month.

My intention is to get the bits out and clean / photograph them this weekend.

Just to be clear mine doesn't have the M1 / M2 buttons as i didn't bother with those, you would buy them and fit them to it.

Try AliExpress, I have seen the full kit including M buttons on there e.g. https://www.aliexpress.com/i/1005004899307226.html

What exact modes you can assign and what do you need to wire/connect ?
