I was pretty new to dSLR when I took this one. Mid-high ISO, Program mode (Av, at best), oh my.... This is one of the few shots I took w/ the 18-55 IS I had. I should probably re-Pchop this since I like to think I've gotten better at post-processing since then, too. Before: I actually still like the Pchop'd version in BW. This picture was also chosen to be on schmaps for Chicago. After:

looks good Jeff!
How did you get the clouds in your sky? It looks like just toning up the sky in your original photo would give you just a bluer sky (without the clouds).

^^^Nice sky. Was it really like that or did you bring that in from another pic?
Funny how the shadows hit that center building right at the metal work break. Took me a second to realize why the building looked different above and below that line. My city shots always have that moire effect on tall buildings, too. I wonder if there's a way to get rid of that.

Thanks, guys. Ashu, there were no clouds in the sky at the time and it was sunset. I think I got annoyed by yet another cloudless day when I was out and about w/ my camera so I just googled "sky + clouds" and found something I thought might work. lol In the past, I've used a gradient on the sky to try to fake a polerizer, but I sometimes get an 'auro' around what I've masked off to shield from the gradient effect. I'll post something up if that doesn't make sense.
Mark, I never really noticed that before....or at least it never sunk in until now. I think you may have cursed me for life now! Arg!

Me too... that's what makes it so fun!
I tried to add a sky like Jeff did in his recent pic, but I failed. My problem was the difficulty in masking out the sky in my pic, since there are a lot of leaves and branches. Before: After:

Leaves are pain to work around. Sometime it's easier to just "trim the trees" so to speak. Do what you can and then eliminate the branches that look really bad.

schmaps should start paying people for their images.

I would remove that bench for the picture, kinda distracts me from the train. But up to you!

Honestly, I kinda liked the step stool. Made me feel like it was waiting for the passengers to disembark.
This is how it looks without the stool, and I guess some more grass on the left.

I thought the step stool was fine and belonged in the pic. I was laughing at the idea of the train being a distraction.
I've been playing around with ways to drop a sky into the pic without making the leaves look weird. Not at all easy to do, especially working from the .PNG file. There is always a one or two pixels "aura" around the leaves that makes it look like they're glowing. If someone knows of a way to cleanly isolate the leaves into another layer, I'd love to see it.

Sure. You can email it to me at markj at bimmermail.com. How big of a file is it?

Not real happy with this, but it was a bit easier with the RAW file.
