Why BMW?

I do 90% of manumatic shifting using the shift knob and with this brilliant ZF tranny it's quite satisfying. Old habits die hard. I understand that the electric revolution will for the most part kill off shifting, but I would have expected BMW to at least stick with a standard shift knob design until the last ICE model rolled off the line. In fact, I wish they would do the opposite and offer a beefed-up shifter for M-sport models that could be calibrated for more shift resistance, to make it feel like "banging" gears. Not quite like an old-school SMG, but in that direction.

As far as charging for add-ons like heated seats and steering wheel after purchase, BMW replied to my email stating as far as right now that will not be coming to the USA market for the time being. What are the executives thinking!
BMW has already replied to the internet uproar about the subscription rumors. There are options to permanently purchase, or only purchase for a short period (such as, it may be cheaper for those leasing to use headed seats for 3 months at $40 each year than pay for it permanently at $499). BMW offers a similar free trial, subscription options, and permanent purchase for the Drive Recorder.

No matter how they explain it, paying for heated seats is ridiculous. The cheapest economy cars have heated seats. No way in hell I'd pay for that crap.

Most "economy cars" also have radar-guided cruise control nowadays, but BMW makes you pay a lot extra for it.

The fact is, luxury cars are expensive, and they make you pay for random crap. If you don't like it, you can always buy a Toyota.

I already have a Toyota, if people speak out about these BS fee's these companies change their tune fast. Remember the Car Play subscription fee? Nobody was going for that and they changed that crap back quick. Doesn't really matter how much money I have, I don't like wasting it. Some things are inexcusable like paying for car play or heated seats.

I totally hear you - these should be standard on a luxury BMW, and the 3 series needs to finally get ventilated or cooled seats as an option (or even standard).

Standard and Optional Equipment

BMW can offer any feature it wishes as standard equipment, but with every feature it makes standard, the base price of the car goes up. No car maker offers standard equipment for free, the costs for those features are reflected in the MSRP. I get no pleasure out of paying $1K for an upgraded HK stereo. Then again, my wife doesn't value that feature, so in her car, she enjoys a base stereo and pays $1,000 less for it. The same is true for other features, like the new and excellent limited slip diff that I value but she doesn't. Because BMW makes many of their cars' features "optional" my wife (and therefore I, too) recently saved $7000 on a BMW she bought in comparison to the cost of the car I bought. In my case at least, I haven't found a downside to paying (or not paying) for optional equipment. I know it feels like at times they're trying to "stick it to me," but in all honesty, I can't fault BMW for giving me relatively broad control over the build specs and prices of the cars I buy. I've had many great experiences custom-ordering BMWs and doing so has saved me a tidy sum.

The only time we are made to buy features is when they're standard and there's no way to defeat them. Optional features are just that- optional. Nobody is making anyone choose options.

Ventilated seats for the 3

I agree, where are the ventilated seats? In hot Texas, I'd snap that option up. Side and rear sunshades as well if they'd offer those again -- I had these on two F30s, which worked great for blocking light for computer work in the back seat on long trips and especially for keeping the kids cool in the back.

Ceramic tint will really help with harmful UV exposure, especially with your dash. I agree that shades would be helpful, even if manual. For whatever reason, the G80 M3 (and series M above as far as I know) can option ventilated seats. If anything, I'd think they would option on the M-performance and lower trims and not on the full fat M "race" dedicated car.

BMW (and others) are shifting focus to higher-end products. This seems to result in allocation of limited resources towards the high-end. Active Cruise Control not being available on any X3 except and X3M is another unexpected example.

I went and mocked up an X3 M40i and ACC is available (in US), but it doesn't seem available on the X3 30i.

They ended up lying to me about an allocation so I went to another dealership. The allocation they had for me should be entering production any day. If im lucky I should have the car in 4-6 weeks

Where are you located? My 2023 m3 cx been sitting at the port in Germany since July 11th. So yeah if you are in the US I would say 3 to 4 months if you are lucky.

The M340i's are being built in Mexico, so its a 3 day boat ride from there to California.

Real question… does BMW really put any Made In Mexico vehicles destined for the continental US on a boat at all? I'd think they'd use rail.

They surprisingly do put it on boats. Either to the west or east coast

I thought that as well, but it is by boat.
