New tire yes or no
So for a few days now the tires (run flates) on my X5 msport with the 19s got a nail stuck in it loses air but I just put more in it.Takes a day or 2 till it gets to the point when I have to put more in it.I saw on the internet that some people have patched theirs but when I call tire shops they tell me to replace it because it can't be fix. The car only has 569 miles. Should I just buy a new tire or see if I can find a shop to repair it.
Your advice is much appreciated Last edited by Christopher06; 03-18-2016 at 04:38 PM.. |

Most manufactures recommend to replace RF's if damaged in any way. Some manufactures say their tire can be patched, depending on what the damage is and where it is. If it is nearer the edge of the tread/side wall, the tire should be replaced. If it is in the center 80% of the tread there is a good chance it can be patched. It is a bit of a shot in the dark, for what RF's cost... I am cheap and if it is just a simple nail, I would have my local shop patch it.

Just had one of my rear Ice & Snows patched, no issues...was a screw in the outermost tread block. I knew it was there, but BMW mentioned it when it was in for service, but they wouldn't touch it. It wasn't leaking when I dropped it off, but I think the tech removed the screw, found that it punctured through, and promptly put it back. They then quoted me on tire replacement (of course). I took it direct from there to a friend's shop...removed tire, patched...voila.

What a bunch of B.S.. I had that happened to me a few months ago. Went to a local chain tire store. Sale's man told me that my tire manufacture (conti) does not recommend their tires to be patched. I laughed and left the place. The next day I when to another tire store and they patched it for twenty bucks.

Typical...tire companies are in the business of selling tires, so that makes sense. I'm sure there's a liability component as well. Just pass me the waiver to sign.

It would be best to repair the tire as soon as possible if you are going to go that route. Driving on the tire with a nail or screw in it may cause additional damage to the tire. Consider the information in the link below.
http://www.hogantire.com/auto-servic...re-repair.aspx "It is also important to note that the longer a driver uses a flat tire, the more unlikely it becomes that a tire repair service can be performed." Also, note the post in the thread below by JBX in Boston where he was told by local tire store that normally a run flat tire may be patched, provided the puncture is properly situated. http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=570306 You may need to shop around to find a tire store that will do the repair. patch it yourself. I have patched many a tire with a plug kit and never had any issues ever. Where that screw is, is the easiest to repair.
This is all you need. You can buy these kits at walmart. http://www.amazon.com/Slime-1034--T-...8394453&sr=1-1 I carry this kit with me and a tire pump. Saves time if I get a flat somewhere not having to wait for a tow truck.

Patch it, but I would go to a shop and make sure to both plug the hole and glue patch it from the inside. Don't skimp on this.

I had a screw in my tire. Brought it into the dealer to have them remove it and replace it under the tire/wheel coverage. When they did, it turned out to only be the head of a screw.
