2017 Camaro ZL1 comes up juuuuust shy of M4 GTS (Nurburgring) Nordschleife lap time

Road & Track - Watch the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Set a Blisteringly Fast Nurburgring Time

GM has produced an official Nordschleife lap time of 7:29.60 for the 2017 Camaro ZL1, which is just shy of the M4 GTS's run of 7:27.88. Honestly, around Nords, a 1.72 second spread is really just a matter of waking up on the right side of the bed that morning, or just how many leaves are on track at Bergwerk on that particular day, or just how terrifying the armco outside of Mutkurve is looking... You get the idea. The lap times are basically equivalent.

That's less than 0.5% difference for a car with +147 HP on the M4 GTS. Eat that, haters. I am extremely impressed that the M4 GTS was able to hold off the ZL1.

What's a little odd is that GM had Drew Cattell do the run. You'd think that GM would pull in one of the many Corvette C7.R or ATS-V.R drivers with tons of professional Nordschleife experience to extract the most out of the car. The last time Jan Magnussen drove a production Corvette around the ring, he beat the factory time by 4 seconds. Maybe it's some kind of GM tradition. Jim Mero (also an engineer) is the guy who set the official Corvette Nords lap times too.

Is there an official (Factory or AMS Supertest) time for the GT350R?

I remember searching but could not find one.

I remember seeing a similar number quoted in another thread, but cannot find an actual reliable source for this GT350R lap time.

Evo cites it in Jan 2015, but they offer no source.

FWIW, many other reports of that time reference the Evo article. For example, Car and Driver.

I just asked the author (over Twitter) if he had a source. We'll see what comes back.

So a 130k track car is 0.5% faster then a $65k street car that competes with the Hellcat and Gt500. I wonder how the $65k ZL1 compares to the $65k M4, street car vs street car. The Z/28 which is a track car first has less power but better Aero then the ZL1 is the closer GTS competitor. The Z06 with Z06 package is ~$100k and seems to be much closer competitor to the GTS then the ZL1.

The ZL1 is not GM's track ready Camaro, that is the Z28's job. The ZL1 is a Hellcat and GT500 competitor. ZL1 may have the hp, but it is also 500lbs heavier.

This is the Camaro the so-called "haters" are waiting for. Big aero just like the GTS.

Nope, the 7:32 time was a rumor and further denied by Ford.

There is no official GT350R Nurburgring time by factory or Sport Auto.

Nice lap, still to my experience ca 2 seconds is a great deal on Nurburgring. Every one who drive here will know that when you a getting close to a cars potential it could be very hard to find 2 seconds here. The guys puting in these factory laps are solid drivers, Porsche, BMW and US cars. To cut time on these laptimes as they show here in video( Us and BMW) is very very hard.

I thought Z28 was the direct competitor of the GTS. Z28 vs GTS is more like apples to apples.

I still don't understand why BMW wouldn't put wider tires on M4 GTS. Front: P265/35R19, rear: P285/30R20. Tires are really the weakest link for M4 GTS.
