BMW building more than 700 M4 GTS? Seems like it

Believe this may be big enough to deserve attention drawn to this other thread

I doubt that. Law suits await if so. They will not even build you another GTS if it gets totaled. All pre production cars are to be crushed to avoid the possibility of over 700 as well. Someone has the math wrong.

Pre-production and cars that went through press car inspections are accounted for

Usually Press cars, Movie cars, Dealer Launch cars, pre-production cars, etc etc are all listed as such

To get down to 700 they will have to crush many many cars that are not listed as any of those.

Will be interesting to see what happens

Sadly I expect many many to be crushed.

There was a similar lawsuit in the early 90s. BMW promised to built 500 E28 M5s, but built over a 1000 of them. In the end, BMW issued $4,000 vouchers to the buyers of the E28 M5. Simple math tells us they'd rather sell a 100k+ car than crush it to avoid a similar outcome.

Now, I haven't yet looked at the GTS build sheets myself, so this is just a guess, but I think the M4 DTM Editions are based on the GTS, so they will use the GTS VIN range. This is why we are seeing additional cars being built.

Their standard equipment lists and Individual equipment lists are exactly the same as other North American GTS models

I wouldn't put too much faith in the Individual data on cars like that. Here is the M3 CRT Individual data regarding the interior.

Code:
Z1XX Special upholstery
********************************************************************
** M3 standard leather with contrast stiching/leather champagne **
********************************************************************
Extended leather "Novillo" black as NDSW.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Following items in leather Novillo champagne
(nb. 7 976 104 / Sun Reflective Technology):
* Stripe on backrest (shoulder part on front and rear seats)
* Stripe on thigh support (central on front seats)-(without US)
* Stripe on rear seats (thigh support)
Sewing thread champagne (nb. 2 237 191), code 0671 Z.
Quilting yarn champagne (nb. 2 237 192), code 0671 Z.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Following items with contrast stiching:
* Seats front (double lap seam)
* Headrests front and rear (double lap seam)
* Door panel inserts
* Door panel armrests (softpads)
* Door pull handles
* Centre tunnel console with armrest
Quilting yarn champagne (nb. 2 237 192), code 0671 Z.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(Arrangement as release).
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Seam of front and rear seats according to M-seats.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Remainder of spec. as leather Novillo black (code NDSW).

and here is the reality

In some rare cases(Z4 Mille Miglia Edition), not only build sheets do not list anything, the cars are repainted.

Are the GTS cars plated with number xxx of 700?

I've read that if a car is plated they cant build more than that number, if its not than they can do what they want.

No, they are not number plated. However, the car was heavily advertised to be limited to 700 cars worldwide. Can't make false claims like that without some kind of repercussions, plated or not.

I agree however they can skew this number and nobody would really be able to tell would they?
Lets say they build 1000 or 1200

The 911R has a plate on the interior Number XX of 991

Yup.

Another good example is the 458 speciale and speciale aperta.
The regular speciale is not plated, they could make 1k or 2k if they got enough orders. The aperta however is plated, they made 499 apertas

I mean this thread is a prime example that some people are able to tell. Again, something similar happened with the E28 M5 and that was before anyone could just run VIN checks from their computer at home.

I'm still leaning towards the theory that the extra cars are going to be M4 DTM Champion Editions.

M3 CSL and 1 M Coupe were not individually numbered. In the case of the CSL, BMW UK created a plaque themselves and distributed it to the original buyers after the cars were already delivered.

1 M Coupe plaque simply says One of 450.

GTS were individually number, but they don't have an "ouf of ##" anywhere on the car. It simply shows the production number.

Unless you see a plate that says x of x on it you can be sure the manufacturer will cheat to make more $$. Especially bmw ///Money

Confidential sources not close to me indicated that the production run was actually 1700 and not 700. Marketing messed up big time and added a '1' and as such it wasn't caught until after it had gone out to the public. It's been a publicity nightmare now that forum members have caught on and are adding it up. I heard rumours that BMW marketing personnel will be subjected to public lashings which will be televised live on Vimeo and YouTube.

Stay tuned for proposed dates!

If its 1700 not 700 means that cars will sell for lower prices!

Agree it not always 100%, but these cars are not just being spec'd in Alpine White, but in Mineral Grey, Frozen Grey and Black Sapphire aswell.
Not M4 DTM colors.

Yeah, I saw that too. Still doesn't exactly rule out the DTM theory. You are assuming that DTM cars are all built after the GTS cars finished production. It could be that a bunch of Alpine White cars that were built earlier will be used for the DTM Edition. I haven't really run the GTS numbers yet to know for sure.

So far the only thing that throws a wrench in the whole DTM theory is that DTM editions was not announced for the US/Canadian markets and historically, DTM edition was never available in the US/Canada.

Yes, and now "extras" have appeared in the Euro spec GTS VIN ranges.
In fact the LHD Euro spec GTS range had its last car built on 27 October.

What we need is a confirmed DTM VIN
