X5 40e Spark Plug change interval?
I took my 2016 X5 40e hybrid into the dealer for an oil change. It only has 31,000 miles on the odometer, but the dealer said the computer is showing it needs new spark plugs and cabin filter for a total charge of $647, which is outrageous for 4 plugs.
I declined the cabin filter (I'll do it myself), but the service manager claims the computer triggers a new spark plug change every 4 oil service intervals. I searched for spark plug intervals on this site, but there was no clear answer on the timing of change intervals. Does anyone know if the plugs should be change based solely by age, and not mileage? Thanks! |

I can't remember what the interval was when it popped up that it needed new spark plugs on mine, but I declined, using the logic that at least half the miles since they were last changed had been driven using battery power. So realistically, using the same 50% electric, 50% ICE driving style, they should be good for twice the mileage.
I could be way off, but the BMW specialist garage I took it to (not main BMW dealer) agreed, so I'm waiting until next big service to have them done. |

Yeah, considering we're also using electric, the mileage factor isn't as big. Maybe the frequency of start/stop impacts the longevity though.
With that said, I'm probably going to do it myself (or maybe have the local BMW shop do it if I don't have the time). It's only 4 plugs and you may as well change the coil packs at the same time. |
