Estimating M4 torque based on the graph...
Can't we estimate the torque for the new M3 based on these two graphs?
New M3: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/att...4&d=1379997156 Old M3: http://www.kenrockwell.com/bmw/image...7/m3-v8-hp.gif It shows the old M3's torque curve (which we know the numerical data for), and it's probably to scale, but I haven't seen anyone make an estimate based on this... I'd do it but have a lot of work to take care of. (Really!!!) Just curious. |

My inside info is that it is close to 400, so I imagine the official BMW figure could be in the 395 range. At any rate will be a blast to drive!

I did the same exercise. One problem with your scaling is that the redline of the current M3 is 8400, it appears to be closer to 8600 on your scale. However, it also just isn't possible to have the current M3 redline at 8400, start at 1000 rpm and the first knee in the torque curve at 3500 rpm (have a look at the "exact" curves directly from BMW). In short these are basically marketing cartoons and are not very precise at all.

Please forgive my ignorance, I'm new to BMW however I am learning because I am probably going to own an F80 here in the relatively near future.
I was told at the BMW dealer that the HP and Torque numbers were measured at the rear wheels. I can't believe this is true - the ~430 hp, and ~395 torque we keep hearing are at the rear wheels? I just find this hard to believe considering every other vehicle I've owned these figures were measured at the crank. Can somebody please confirm this, because if this is rear wheel horsepower that is very impressive. |

Agreed about them being cartoons. I have never seen such "clean" dyno plots except in marketing brochures. They do however present a good idea of the characteristics of the engine to the laymen.
